Their craftsmanship, and especially carpentry, has been one of the Shakers' main sources of income since they emigrated from England to America in 1774, even though the Furniture was initially made primarily for their own use. Her high-quality turned wooden furniture was well received across the country, even if the simple, unadorned and unfussy design of the pieces often met with criticism from her contemporaries. Their Rocking chairs (Salem rocker) are particularly famous.
The Shakers were open to technical innovations and introduced the circular saw to the USA. When they offered their Furniture at the World's Fair in Philadelphia in 1876, they learned about the bentwood process developed by Michael Thonet and subsequently began making their own bentwood furniture.
As demand increased, their carpentry workshops soon switched to mass production and some of them turned into furniture factories. Today, original Shaker Furniture is extremely rare and hard to afford, although replicas are being manufactured all over the world.This table is only oiled and it has some signs of wear, but this patina only makes it more beautiful.
