The A'dammer (or Amsterdammer) was designed in 1978 by designer and architect Aldo van den Nieuwelaar. In his designs, van den Nieuwelaar drew inspiration from movements such as De Stijl and Bauhaus. For the design of the A'dammer, van den Nieuwelaar devised an ingenious system: the ribs of the shutters are in fact also the handles of the cabinet. This way, people never have to bend down to open the A'dammer.
