The Knoll Studio Barcelona Chair is an iconic design by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In 1929, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was asked to design the German Pavilion for the World Exhibition in Barcelona. He created a rhythmic whole in which the Barcelona Chair, then called MR90, played a central role. The characteristic cross frame is based on curulean seats from ancient Rome and is combined with contemporary materials. The elegant frame is made of chrome, which is hand-polished to a mirror-like finish. The backrest and seat are interwoven with straps of cowhide, which are dyed in the same color as the seat cushions. These foam cushions are covered with top quality leather. All 40 panels are hand-hemmed and fitted with buttons, all from one piece of leather. Although the chair was first produced in Germany, Mies donated the production rights to his good friend Florence Knoll in 1948. A signature and KnollStudio logo can be found on the frame. The only thing that has changed since the first version is the comfort, which has been significantly improved with extra wadding.
