Buy the bag you'll actually wear, buy it secondhand, and buy it from somewhere that checks it before you pay. That's my whole philosophy in one sentence. Which Chanel should you buy first?
Five families cover most of what you'll see on our Chanel brand page. Here's how I'd choose between them.
Classic Flap. Karl Lagerfeld introduced it in the 1980s, with the interlocking CC turnlock most people picture when they hear the word Chanel. It's the safe first buy: structured, instantly recognisable, easy to sell on later if your taste changes. Black caviar with gold hardware is the default for a reason. 2.55. The original, introduced in February 1955. The name is simply the date. The 2005 reissue line brought it back with the rectangular Mademoiselle lock and an all-metal chain. Choose it over the Classic Flap if you prefer understatement: no logo on the front, just quilting and that lock. I wrote a separate 2.55 guide because it deserves one.
Boy. Launched in 2011. Boxier, chunkier chain, harder edge. It reads casual rather than formal, and it suits people who find the Classic Flap a little too polite. Underrated with jeans.
19. Named for its launch year, 2019. Soft, slouchy, oversized quilting, a mixed-tone chain. The most relaxed of the four to wear, and the one I reach for when I don't want to look like I'm trying.
Vintage. Earlier decades, often lambskin that has developed real character and gold-toned hardware with a warmth newer plating doesn't quite have. Condition varies enormously, which is exactly why every vintage piece on Whoppah goes through the curation team before it lists.

What size Chanel works in real life?
Classic sizes run small, medium, jumbo and maxi, and the jump between them matters more than photos suggest.
The small is an evening bag. Cards, keys, lipstick, and a large phone is a squeeze. Lovely, but be honest about your life. The medium is the one I recommend most often: it fits the daily essentials, sits neatly under the arm, and it's the size most buyers picture when they imagine the bag. The jumbo is for people who genuinely carry things: sunglasses case, a small pouch, sometimes a slim book. It's noticeably more bag on the body. The maxi is divisive. I'll say it plainly: on most frames it wears the owner rather than the other way round. Some people carry it brilliantly. Most don't.
One practical note: on the smaller sizes the chain can usually be doubled to wear the bag short, while the bigger sizes hang longer and lean crossbody or shoulder. Try both in the mirror before you decide anything.
Caviar or lambskin, and does hardware matter?
Caviar leather is pebbled and durable. It shrugs off fingernails, rain and restaurant floors, which is why I steer nearly every first-time buyer toward it. Lambskin is soft, smooth and frankly gorgeous in the hand, and it picks up scratches if you look at it wrong. Lambskin rewards careful owners and punishes everyone else.
Hardware is mostly taste. Gold against black quilting is the classic pairing and the easier one to resell. Silver-tone reads cooler and more modern, and it photographs crisply against lighter colours. What matters more than the colour is the wear: check the edges of the CC lock and the chain links for plating loss, because hardware wear is one of the first places a heavily used bag gives itself away. On older vintage pieces the gold tone often looks warmer and heavier than on recent production. Many collectors prefer it that way. I'm one of them.
What do secondhand Chanel bags cost?
I'm not going to print numbers that will be stale by autumn, so here are the live figures instead. Across the platform today: from about 280 euros for small pieces to 8,400 euros, with most classic models between 2,000 euros and 5,800 euros. By model: Classic Flap 2,300 euros to 6,200 euros for most, up to 8,300 euros, 2.55 and reissues 1,400 euros to 4,400 euros, typically around 2,600 euros, Boy 2,200 euros to 4,700 euros, typically around 3,100 euros, 19 roughly 3,000 euros to 5,800 euros, and vintage pieces wide, because age and condition dominate: recent listings ran from under 1,500 euros to well over 4,000 euros.

How to read condition before you buy
Condition moves price more than age does. My checklist, in order: corners (rubbing shows here first), the puff of the quilting (flat quilting means a hard life), the chain and its leather lacing (stretch and grime), hardware plating, the interior (pen marks, lifted lining), and the serial sticker or microchip, which Chanel used as stickers until 2021 and as embedded microchips from spring 2021. Why buy secondhand instead of the boutique?
Three reasons, in my order of importance. First, availability: boutique stock of the classics is limited and the waits and purchase limits of recent years are well documented, while a secondhand marketplace has the bag in front of you today.
