Xandra Donders Silkscreen including passepartout Xandra Donders lives and works in a beautiful monumental building in the heart of the city of Groningen. She studied respectively at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and art academy Minerva in Groningen, where she has long worked as a teacher. In the summer of 2003 Xandra Donders stayed in Callosa d'en Saria, Spain. This stay was offered to her by Fundacion Cultural 'Knecht-Drenth'. She moved into a studio apartment high on a hill in the old city center, a maze of narrow streets. It was a house with barred windows which gave her a "confined" feeling. Footsteps could be heard everywhere. But outside she saw only the passing shadows of people. The streets, deserted and overheated by the blistering sun. That desolation, the heat and the shadows sliding by inspired her. But also the sharp, ever-changing shadows on uneven pavement. All in all, it became a process of austerity and enrichment. Xandra Donders' work is now in the collections of the Groninger Museum and the Henriette Polak Museum in Zutphen. Companies such as Gasunie and Staalbankiers also purchased her work. And, of course, her work can be found at various art loans in the Netherlands. Over the years, Xandra Donders has developed her own distinct graphic technique. She uses an ink-coated linoleum sheet to print over an acrylic painting. An exciting effect is created between these materials, which remains tangible in the final print. The works are made on paper and are distinctly colorful. It is cheerful, exuberant and yet monumental in nature. Her works are about dream and reality, about questions and doubts. In her own words, working in (small) editions allows her to keep a copy of each print herself. "Otherwise I would lose my roots."
