Dutch minimalistic metal room divider or bookcase by Wim Rietveld, the son of Gerrtit Rietveld. It was designed for “De Bijenkorf” the Netherlands in the 1960s and was inspired by a model designed by Gerrit Rietveld. This bookcase or cabinet is a pretty rare piece of Dutch mid-century design. It was designed by Wim Rietveld, the son of legendary Architect Gerrit Rietveld, for luxury department store “De Bijenkorf” in the Netherlands. “De Bijenkorf” is comparable to Harrods or Bergdorf Goodman and can still be visited in Amsterdam the Netherlands. It was part of a high end furniture collection in the 1960s. Bijenkorf commissioned some of the best Dutch Designers to create a range of furniture products. Among the designers were names like Gerrit Rietveld, Wim Rietveld, Gio Ponti and Friso Kramer. Our freestanding bookcase is an example which is still in good shape after all those years. Because of the metal, many pieces feel victim to rust. Our piece is in original condition but has barely any rust. It does have off course traces of use to the white and black paint. The bookcase with its black and white painted shelves can be positioned against a wall, but because it can be used at both sides, it will also make a beautiful room divider. A unique piece of furniture for any midcentury lover and a must for a Dutch design collector. Designer: Wim Rietveld Period: 1960s Origin: The Netherlands Material: Metal Color: Black, White
