Wil van Leeuwen "Still life" oil on canvas 93 x 105 cm
Wil van Leeuwen 1909 Amsterdam -1994 1 Virtually self-taught, but does receive brief painting lessons from Harmen Meurs, Dick de Haas and Jan Everts. He developed into a versatile artist: painter, sculptor, jewelry enameler and poet/philosopher. His artistry was initially combined with his profession as a decorative painter, but after the age of forty he concentrated solely on his artistic career.
Wil van Leeuwen was a great advocate of the interests of visual artists in the Netherlands. Together with others, he managed to ensure that artists' associations can exhibit annually in the new wing of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Van Leeuwen was a (board) member of several of these associations, some of which he co-founded. He was also a long-time member of the committee that purchases works of art in the context of the Visual Art Regulations (BKR).
His style can be referred to as abstract expressionism. He did not paint from examples, but converted his feelings into harmonious bright colors and equally harmonious sculptures. The forms he chooses, whether abstract or figurative, are less important. Wil van Leeuwen has always been fascinated by the “elusive”. The search for love, the higher thing that controls our lives. He himself called his style “progressive expressionism”. Willem Sandberg, former director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, purchased work from him and praised his great sensitivity to color and his poetic delivery.
