About the photographer
Urho Aarre Hugo Saarinen (May 16, 1927, Helsinki - March 25, 1991, Helsinki) was a Finnish photographer
Saarinen started his professional career as a photographer in 1943. During the years 1943-1944 he served as a camera assistant and B-cameraman in the information service of the Finnish Armed Forces. After the war he worked as a photo intern and laboratory assistant at Fotostudio Pauli Huovila in Helsinki in 1945, and as a lithography intern at Sanoma Oy in 1946. Saarinen worked as a studio and outdoor photographer at Valokuvaliike Correx and as an industrial photographer at Studio Koistinen from 1947 to 1948. From 1948 he worked as a freelance photographer and owned photographic companies called Kuvapalvelu UA Saarinen, Haavisto & Saarinen, UA Saarisen Kameravintti, Studio Colorrex and UA Saarisen Lentävät Kamerat. Saarinen has taken photographs for various publications, including the New York Times, Helsingin Sanomat, Suomen Kuvalehti, Apu, Seura, Kotiliesi, Koti-Posti and Viikkosanomat. In 1953 he worked as a reportage photographer for the Keystone Press photo agency in Munich and West Berlin.
In addition to his photographic work, Saarinen was a member of the Helsinki City Council from 1989 to 1991 and served as chairman of the Puotila-Seura and the Itä-Helsingin kaupunkiyhdistys (East Helsinki City Association). In 1988 he received a state-subsidized artist's pension.
