S35 – A classic of modernism
This armchair among the cantilever chairs from the Bauhaus period is light and mobile in character and offers a high level of seating comfort. With this he surpasses everything that is heavy and slow. The modern sense of life that the S 35 expresses was still visionary in 1930. Now it is firmly entrenched in our mobile and individualistic way of life. With the S 35 , Marcel Breuer managed to capture all the functions of a spring-loaded tubular steel armchair in a continuous line that also includes the armrests. This doubled the spring effect, because seat
and armrests spring independently of each other. The suspension of the armrests absorbs the spring movement of the rear legless frame.
The comfortable S 35 club chair was first presented in 1930 during the famous exhibition of the Deutscher Werkbund at the 'Salon des Artistes Décorateurs' in Paris. The armchair was part of the model furnishings of an apartment designed by Breuer, together with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer.
