The nestor of Dutch glass art, Floris Meydam, has designed an Orange vase for the youngest royal child, Princess Ariane who was born on April 10, 2007 as the third daughter of Prince Willem Alexander and Princess Máxima. At 87 years old, Floris Meydam still draws new designs very rarely. The National Glass Museum is therefore particularly proud to have enlisted one of the most famous designers the Leerdam glass tradition has produced for this honorable commission. The Ariane vase is already the tenth in a series that began in 1927 with the Orange vase designed by Chris Lanooy on the occasion of Princess Juliana's 18th birthday. That first vase, and subsequently all the others, were inspired by the famous Orange Apple. Floris Meydam created a particularly idiosyncratic design based on a sophisticated sizing system. 1,000 were issued by the Glass Museum. However, you may very well come across a vase with a 1300 number in the corridors. However, a large batch of vases was rejected and destroyed. These numbers were not reused, but simply 'continued to be numbered'.See photos.
