The Lotus Armchair was designed by Rob Parry (The Hague, 1925-2023) in the late 1950s and put into production by the furniture manufacturer Gelderland in the early 1960s. Rob Parry trained at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, and his main teachers were Cor Alons, Paul Schuitema and Gerrit Rietveld at whose desk he worked.
The design typifies a stream of progressive Mid Century designs is a household name in the world of Design. The armchair has a relatively simple but ingenious frame of wood and metal. The back has sturdy metal springs to which the cushions are attached.
The chair is in sublime condition and shows minimal signs of use. The wool upholstery is near perfect and has no stains or damage. The black lacquered wood frame has no damage and shows very minimal wear. It is possible that the chair was reupholstered once in the 1970s based on the upholstery. In addition, new and modern elastic springs were added to the underside sometime within the last 10 years. The padding is still in good condition giving the chair pleasant seating comfort.
