This set consists of an original Knoll Barcelona Chair and matching ottoman, a recent edition and finished in ivory leather, a particularly elegant and sought-after choice that highlights the purity of the design.
Designed in 1929 for the German Pavilion at the Barcelona International Exposition, the Barcelona Chair was created as part of what is one of the pinnacles of modernist architecture. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe conceived both the Pavilion and the chair as a single, unified statement of modern design — radical in its clarity, materials, and proportions. The Pavilion hosted the inaugural ceremony of the German exhibits, presided over by the Spanish king. Mies understood that this moment demanded more than ordinary furniture. As he famously explained, it had to be “an important chair, a very elegant chair… The government was to receive a king. The chair had to be monumental. In those circumstances, you just couldn’t use a kitchen chair.”
The result was a design that has since become as iconic as the Pavilion itself. With its hand-tufted leather cushions and elegant hand-polished stainless steel X-frame, the Barcelona Chair combines architectural precision with understated luxury — a defining object of 20th-century modernism.
The chair and stool are in excellent condition, showing only light traces of use. A timeless design piece that brings both history and presence to any interior.
