With fillers, silicone, tattoos and trendy clothing, people try to make you think that everything in life is fixable. And that while the most precious things are free.
The artwork depicts a rusty crooked hat on a polished sphere secured with a simple tie-wrap and a foot of concrete.
The materials also have a story.
I found the big rusty nut on an impressive morning where we were searching with a few thousand people for a missing boy along the river. Cousin Astrid apprised me the night before if I was going too. With double feelings we were searching that morning on the beautiful sandy beaches when suddenly that huge nut was there, among a pile of wreckage in the reeds. Didn't know what to do with it but decided to take it.
The crystal ball came from the thrift store. Didn't find what I was looking for and was already walking towards the exit. Since I had nothing I looked the other way at the checkout and saw the beautiful solid glass dome. Again I didn't know what to do with it but bought the thing, put it in my pocket and cycled home.
To make it stand robustly upright, after a while I plunged the glass base into a block of concrete.
Looked nice but it needed something more. Suddenly I remembered the big rusty ring and tried to combine the two. Had already taken the first pictures when I suddenly saw that the ring was not exactly upright but more slightly angled, a much more exciting image.
Much better, but still something was missing. I found some bobbins of string, colored cord, a piece of black electrical wire and a roll of red tiled elastic that had been lying there for at least 15 years, when suddenly a bag of tie-wraps caught my eye. Yes! That completed the picture.
After endlessly twisting the thing from all sides and a night's sleep, I suddenly saw the message, the self-mockery of the resulting puppet. Don't take yourself too seriously.
Hence the title ', 'Not so serious'.
