Breda, NetherlandsView all items from this sellerThe Moooi Smoke Armchair is a design by the Dutch designer Maarten Baas and clearly bears the signature of this idiosyncratic designer. In contrast to the commercial Smoke Armchair that is currently sold through Moooi, this is a unique object because the chair is covered with black velvet instead of black leather. It is a one-of-a-kind, upholstered for the presentation 'A Life Extraordinary' during the Salone del Mobile fair in Milan in 2018. The chair was in Moooi 's storage after the fair and has been in my home for a year now. but we don't use the chair.
The Smoke series, of which this armchair is part, was Maarten Baas 's graduation project and with which he made his worldwide breakthrough. Smoke's concept revolves around different perceptions of beauty. 'In nature everything is in motion, which creates a certain beauty. On the other hand, it is human to want to keep everything as beautiful as possible, as something was always intended to be,' says Baas. This contradiction forms the basis of Smoke. The designs in the series were burned and the blackened wood was then returned to a usable condition with epoxy resin. The designs are then recoated and are back in their original shape.
The chair has never been used, and is therefore in excellent condition. New price is €5,474
