Ernst was born in 1891 in Brühl, a suburb of Cologne. In 1914 he traveled to the Montparnasse district of Paris where artists from all over the world gathered. There he met Guillaume Apollinaire, Robert Delaunay and Hans Arp. When World War I broke out later that year, Ernst had to join the German army. In 1918 he married the art historian Luise Straus.
