Driven by the spirit of modernity, the Dutch architect and designer Mart Stam developed this completely new chair in 1926. A piece of seating reduced to the uttermost, made from just a piece of tubular steel and a piece of molded wood. The innovative design without rear chair legs was the first functional cantilever chair in the world. Presented for the first time by Ludvig Mies van der Rohe in the Weissenhaussiedlung in Stuttgart in 1927. Mart Stam was a temporary guest lecturer at the Bauhaus in Dessau in the 1920s, as well as editor of the avant-garde magazine ABC. After the war he moved to the Soviet occupation zone, where he initiated the founding of the Dresden University of the Arts in 1949. As early as 1950 he accepted the appointment as rector at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art. As part of the move away from artistic freedom in the GDR, he resigned from his position in 1952 and left the country. From then on he worked independently in the Netherlands and Switzerland, where he died in seclusion in 1986. Chairs in very good condition. Slight signs of wear on the seat. Three pieces available.
