The LCW is part of the famous Plywood Group designed by Charles and Ray Eames. LCW stands for Lounge Chair Wood.
In the early 1940s, Charles and Ray Eames experimented with wood-forming techniques that would have profound effects on the design world. Their discoveries led to a commission from the U.S. Army in 1942 to design plywood splints, stretchers and gliders in shell-shaped plywood techniques. After World War II, they applied the technology to mass-produce their exclusive chair designs. The process of laminated layers of beech wood, reduced the weight than a solid piece of wood. The visually stylish appearance of the chair and the plywood technology laid the foundation for modern furniture design. The chair is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
