The Knoll Studio Barcelona Chair is an iconic design by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In 1929, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was asked to design the German Pavilion for the World Exhibition in Barcelona. He created a rhythmic whole in which the Barcelona Chair, then still called MR90, was central. The distinctive cross frame is based on curule seats from ancient Rome and is combined with contemporary materials. For example, the elegant frame is formed from chrome, which is hand-polished to a mirror-like finish. The backrest and seat are interwoven with cowhide straps, which are dyed in the same color as the seat cushions. These foam cushions are upholstered with top quality leather. All 40 squares are hand-hemmed and fitted with buttons, all from a single piece of leather. Although the chair was first produced in Germany, Mies granted the production rights in 1948 to his good friend Florence Knoll. The signature of Mies van der Rohe and the KnollStudio logo can be found on the frame. The only thing that has changed since the first version is the comfort, which has been significantly improved by means of extra wadding. The Barcelona Chair is 75 centimeters wide, 77 centimeters high and 77 centimeters deep. The seat height is 43 centimeters.
