Jonathan attended the Frank Joubert Art Center for five years and graduated in 1985 with a degree in Visual Art, majoring in printmaking and drawing, from the Ruth Prowse School of Art. He lived and worked in Scotland for two years, where he worked at Peacock Printmaking Studio and Cyrenian Art Center in Aberdeen, Scotland. He returned to South Africa in 1988 and founded Hard Ground Printmakers Workshop, an independent printmaking studio.
