Vintage Danish Cocoon lamp by Svend Aage Holm Sørensen produced by German lamp manufacturer Goldkant Leuchten for the Dutch lamp manufacturer RAAK in 1962. See old RAAK catalog photo.
Svend Aage Holm Sørensen was a Danish designer who made lamps for Fog & Mørup and Goldkant Leuchten, who developed this cocoon lamp for Raak in the Netherlands.
The spherical lampshade is reminiscent of George Nelson's 'bubble lamp' and is made of Chrysaline. Chrysaline has a special technology called 'spray-on fiberglass coating', a technique inspired by the silkworm. This is why the lamp is called the 'cocoon' lamp. The inside frame consists of white powder-coated iron wire folded into the shape of a globe. The fitting is made of beautifully patinated brass and plastic. An attractive iconic vintage lamp in excellent condition with barely noticeable signs of use. See detailed photos.
