Simple imagery, rich expressiveness. This is characteristic of the work of the versatile artist Ellen van Toor (1958, Vlaardingen). Mixed media: This is an etching, which is then finished as a painting with oil paint and ink and as a collage. The etching was made in 20 copies, of which this is the first. Due to the manual processing (collage and paint), each copy is unique. The paper with the etching is glued to a panel and beautifully mounted and framed in a black metal (aluminum) frame with glass, creating a 3-D effect. It fits perfectly with Van Toor's work! Title: at the goldfish's house (1) The work is signed in pencil and provided with title and edition number. It is in beautiful condition and can be hung on the wall. Some inconspicuous light scratches and a few dents along the edges of the metal frame. Ellen van Toor attended the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague from 1976 to 1981. She makes still lifes of simple objects such as ladies' bags, fish, dressing tables. She does this in such a way that her work exudes a special, delicate atmosphere. Her light-hearted collages are introverted, almost subdued in character. Van Toor works with warm colors and weathered materials. Old maps, music paper, feathers, wallpaper and fabrics in combination with the etching technique. In this way she gives a new meaning in a new context. Van Toor works successfully in many areas: she makes collages, jewelry, paintings and utensils. She has been creatively making collages since childhood. Using scraps of paper, pieces of textile, feathers and other residual materials, she created her own world. However, cutting and pasting has not remained child's work for her. Using the collage technique she creates a mature reality in which big questions play a role. The elements 'freedom' and 'restriction' occupy a prominent place in her artistic expressions. Freedom and limitation: one has no right to exist without the other. Fish and bird are the symbols in her fantasy world that represent the apparent contradiction of freedom and limitation. They explore each other's habitat, each other's boundaries and sometimes exceed them. During her work, this struggle arises naturally, intuitively. Using various images, paper, wallpaper, sheet music, fabric and whatever else occurs, she creates a stylized, almost down-to-earth performance that should stimulate the spectator's imagination to create its own interpretation, a never-before-seen vision of existence. “That fish always comes back because of my zodiac sign. That bird is the fish that can fly, that can transcend the limitations of gravity. The freedom of going wild through life. I am both. The fish swims through the everyday things, but with the wings of creation I enter that other, even freer world.” Ellen van Toor lives and works in The Hague. Her works have been extensively exhibited and are in numerous private collections and museums. This copy belonged to the art collection of Allianz.light scratches and some dents along the edges of the metal frame, but barely visible. The etching is in excellent condition!
