Innovative design by Finnish-American architect and designer Eero Saarinen from 1956, the first chair to date with just one leg and therefore a ground-breaking construction. Today, the Tulip series is one of the great icons of mid-century design.
Saarinen's most famous architectural works include the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the TWA Flight Center at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York.
Eero Saarinen's father, Eliel Saarinen, was the director of the Cranbrook Academy, which is now regarded as the cradle of modern American design. This is where the paths of Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia, Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames crossed, resulting in a close friendship and collaboration between the artists.
