Early and beautifully preserved square side table designed by Florence Knoll for Knoll International, based on her celebrated 1954 collection of architectural coffee and end tables. This example dates from approximately the late 1950s to early 1960s and represents an early production variant with a fully welded chromed steel frame. The restrained square construction is characteristic of Florence Knoll's architectural approach to furniture design. A warm teak-veneered top is carried by a finely proportioned chrome-plated square steel frame. Particularly noteworthy is the construction beneath the tabletop: the supporting structure is recessed from the outer frame, creating a narrow shadow gap that makes the wooden surface appear to float above the steel structure. This subtle detail gives the table an exceptional visual lightness and illustrates Florence Knoll's understanding of furniture as architecture on a domestic scale. Designed in 1954, the Florence Knoll Coffee and End Table series reflects the rational modernist principles she absorbed from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and translated into the interiors of post-war America. This early example retains its original Knoll International paper label to the underside reading “Entwurf Knoll International – gesetzlich geschützt”. The table is preserved in very good original vintage condition, with only minor traces of age and use. The chromed steel frame shows light patination consistent with age, while the original teak top remains particularly well preserved.
