Product description
Original Domus chair by Ilmari Tapiovaara in a special edition with teak veneer, produced in Belgium under license from Knoll International (1950s, presumably De Coene, Kortrijk). While the standard Domus is made of birch, this example has a seat and backrest in teak with a fine straight grain, laminated armrests with dark edge layers, and brass screws. This more luxurious version is rarely encountered. The 1946 design was created for the Domus Academica student complex in Helsinki and became internationally known as the "Finn Chair". Characteristic features are the short armrests, allowing the chair to be pushed close to the table, and the ergonomically curved plywood seat. Condition: Very good vintage condition, clearly better than average. Veneer intact, no delamination, frame sturdy, light signs of wear consistent with age. On the front of the backrest are two metal cover plates at the height of the armrest attachment (see photos). Not restored, original finish. Dimensions approx: Height 78 cm, width 57 cm, depth 52 cm, seat height 44 cm. The new price of the current Artek version is around 900 euros. Pick-up possible, shipping via Whoppah courier.
