Dirk Bakker (1947-2021) studied at the Free Academy in The Hague and at the Ateliers 63 in Haarlem, where his teachers included Ko Westerik. In his academy days and immediately after, he made mainly drawings and graphics in black and white. In the 1980s he started working with color and paint. His technique has changed, but his subjects are still the same. In a drawing-like manner, Bakker likes to set fierce complementary colors against each other. In approaching the background, he shows himself to be a nuanced painter. Usually the main characters are alone on the canvas.
