Height of bell jar 13 cm. Diameter of bell jar 12 cm. Betty (self-taught) works from a home studio in rural Suffolk (England). “My current collection, 'Living on the Edge', is made from and inspired by damaged, discarded books and found materials that I convert into one-off three-dimensional collages. I find inspiration in their form and content and the resulting book sculptures are infused with my own stories to build a little kingdom of magical realism to explore our human condition. I am very concerned about the well-being of our planet and therefore reuse as many materials as possible, including for the packaging of my pieces. My ambition is to be as environmentally friendly as possible. I work both on commission, by telling your own stories, and to the rhythm of the drum in my head, where I find inspiration and soft dark humor in everyday life.” Betty breathes life and magic into her objects and creates fantastic and tiny worlds, populated with small, living houses and filled with their stories. Betty has exhibited her charming work in many galleries in the UK and internationally in Denmark, Munich, Italy and the Netherlands. Inspiration Betty Welcome to my little corner of the art world. If you're here for an elitist conversation about art, unfortunately you're not in the right place. If you've arrived here to take a journey into a miniature world of magical realism, then you've come to the right place. My work is made from pieces of damaged, discarded books. Mistreated books, unreadable books, water-damaged books, books with missing pages, books that had something to say but have reached the end of their lives in that form, everyone is welcome here. I record them, listen to their stories of misery and give them a new reason to exist. To be clear: we are talking about small work. Houses with a footprint of only about one square inch. They stand in their own landscape and tell their story. Some are argumentative, some are sad, some are jubilant, many are simply lost. They all have a story to tell and are almost never shy about talking back. The one thing they all have in common is that they all live on the edge in one way or another, as I think most of us do! So if you're looking for unique, eco-friendly paper miniatures or something to commission, you're welcome.
