Designed in 1906 by Josef Hoffmann for the Wiener Werkstatte and listed in the J. & J. Kohn catalogs as model no. 728, Hoffmann chose this design for the chairs in the Viennese Cabaret Fledermaus which opened in October 1907. For its time, the design was a bold and radical departure from the gilded tradition of European nightclubs and immediately gained popularity. The runners and wooden spheres on the connection points are typical Hoffmann.
They clearly show the influence of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose work helped shape Hoffmann from 1900: the revival of classicist ideals and the use of simple forms in Hoffmann's work can be
