Three strip chairs by Gijs Bakker. The design of the Strip Chair is not particularly striking. The Strip Chair is made of bent laminated wood and actually stands out for its simplicity. What is special about the Strip Chair is that it was designed in 1974. You wouldn't expect that when you see this design. The Strip Chair is stackable and nice and light. Due to its clever design, there are actually no unnecessary parts on this chair. Another thing that makes the Strip Chair particularly interesting is that it was designed by Gijs Bakker. As one of the founders of Droog design in the 1990s, Gijs Bakker had a significant influence on the development of Dutch design. Actually, Gijs Bakker is best known for his jewelry. This Strip Chair is one of the few well-known pieces of furniture he designed. Perhaps that is why it is included in the Stedelijk Museum's permanent design collection. It is said that 11,000 without, and 1,000 with armrests were produced. Gijs Bakker designed the Strip Chair for the Dutch furniture manufacturer Castelijn of Roelofarendsveen. He designed several more pieces of furniture for Castelijn, including the VF folding armchair and a sofa. A few years ago, all the chairs were re-glued by professional furniture maker.
