He trained as an architect in Ghent, but never completed this training. This did not prevent him from later becoming one of the design top with his furniture designs. Maarten van Severen's designs have a minimalistic and powerful appearance. Materials that can often be seen in his designs are metals, Bakelite and wood. Maarten van Severen attached great importance to comfort. A well-known saying of his is: “When you make a table or cabinets, you are constructing. With a chaise longue you are sculpting. Making a chair is different from taking a profile and putting some legs under it. You make a shape for a body. You are looking for the right material that has a certain compressibility. People should be able to leave their imprint in my seats.”
