A duo of Art-vases (2), unique pieces of ceramic art designed by Johan van Loon for Rosenthal Studio Linie in Germany in 1985.
These ceramic vases showcase an exquisite blend of colours and a captivating undulating shape, reminiscent of the tranquillity found in a zen garden. The design is inspired by the Kabbalistic notion of the Hebrew letter Aleph, reflecting Johan Van Loon's artistic vision.
Both vases are in excellent vintage condition, displaying only minor patina consistent with their age and normal usage as decorative objects. It's worth noting that the glazing cracks you mentioned are actually intentional and are an integral part of the vase's design, adding to its unique character.
Johan Gerard van Loon, the talented Dutch ceramist and text artist behind these vases, had a remarkable journey in the world of ceramics and design. He studied textile design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Konstfack in Stockholm, where he learned under the guidance of Stig Lindberg. He also received pottery lessons from renowned potters like Jos Eppens van Veen and Thera Hofstede Crull. His educational pursuits took him to London's Camberwell College of Arts under the mentorship of Lucie Rie.
Van Loon collaborated with Stig Lindberg in Stockholm, where they worked on constructing wall ceramics. After returning to the Netherlands, he established his own studio in Hengelo in 1966. He gained recognition for his ceramic sculptures, some of which were used by the Royal Copenhagen pottery factory in Copenhagen. Additionally, he ventured into textile design and taught at various Dutch art academies, including AKV St. Joost, and later founded the ceramics department at ArtEZ Art & Design in Enschede. His influence extended to Germany, where he also lectured.
