Utrecht, April 3rd 2024 - Nuremberg is the second-hand capital of Germany with just under 25 shops per 100,000 inhabitants, according to a study by Whoppah. The online marketplace for second-hand design furniture has determined the number of second-hand shops, vintage shops and flea markets in the 20 largest German cities. Hamburg brings up the rear with just eight shops per 100,000 inhabitants.

Second-hand capital: Nuremberg in first place with a total of 132 vintage shops & co. With around 25 shops per 100,000 inhabitants and seven shops per 10 km², the selection of flea markets & co. is greatest in Nuremberg: vintage lovers can browse through second-hand treasures like design furniture and art in a total of 132 shops and markets here. However, shopping enthusiasts can also expect a wide selection in Münster: with almost 25 (24.9) vintage options per 100,000 inhabitants, the city is also in second place in the nationwide ranking. Stuttgart completes the top three with around 19 second-hand stores per 100,000 inhabitants.

Little retail choice in Berlin, Munich and Cologne while online demand is the highest While smaller cities have a flourishing vintage scene, there is still room for improvement in Germany's metropolises: In Munich, there are around 15 second-hand shops per 100,000 inhabitants - placing the city in the midfield of the analysis. Berlin and Cologne fare even worse: with only around eleven shops per 100,000 inhabitants, they are in the bottom quarter of the study.

Hamburg offers second-hand lovers the fewest options Hamburg comes last in the ranking with 141 vintage shops. For every 100,000 inhabitants, there are only eight second-hand shops, flea markets and the like. Environmentally conscious shoppers also have comparatively little choice in Duisburg and Essen: with ten and eleven options, where design classics, decorations articles and fashion is offered, per 100,000 inhabitants respectively, the range on offer here is also comparatively low compared to the national average.

"The second-hand market is becoming increasingly important - in addition to the opportunity to purchase (higher quality) design goods at a fair price, it also contributes to an environmentally conscious lifestyle. At Whoppah, we want to promote the circular economy because we are convinced that second-hand design should be easily accessible to everyone. Consumers should see second-hand products as their first choice. Our research shows: Although the number of second-hand shops varies from city to city, it is at a high level nationwide, which illustrates the interest within society, in second-hand design and vintage. We were surprised by the result in the German metropolises, which have comparatively fewer retail options than other cities, but we can see that the demand for online retail is the highest there." comments Thomas Bunnik, founder of Whoppah.
