was a Swiss architect, town planner and designer who became a naturalised French citizen. He is one of the leading exponents of the modern movement. He is particularly well known for his work as an architect. He was the founding father of the "unité d'habitation", a collective housing concept. He legitimised his status as a designer with a line of furniture designed with Charlotte Perriand and her cousin Pierre Jeanneret (armchairs LC1, LC2, etc.). Sobriety is the major characteristic of Le Corbusier's furniture. After training as an engraver and chiseller, he studied architecture. He designed housing units in Marseille, Rezé, Berlin and Briey. His aim was to transform homes into "living machines". In the 1920s, Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret began a collaboration that resulted in the LC furniture line. The furniture was sober, comfortable, suited to large spaces and particularly aesthetic. At the same time, he founded the Union des Artistes Modernes. However, it was not until 1965 that the furniture was published by Cassina. Le Corbusier would enjoy international success as a designer posthumously.
