is a Danish designer and architect. He is considered to be one of the founders of Scandinavian design. He is renowned for his work with wood and for designing over 500 armchairs and chairs. He is famous for bringing greater flexibility and aestheticism to the functionalist movement. Hans Wegner left his mark on 20th century design history with creations such as the Peacock chair (1947), the Round Chair (1949), the Wing chair (1960) and the "OX" and "Papa Bear" armchairs. He quickly developed a passion for wood and began training as a cabinetmaker until the age of 17. He continued his studies and became an architect in 1938. He met Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller, with whom he collaborated on a number of projects. This period also marked the start of his work with furniture publisher Fritz Hansen. In 1943, Hans Wegner founded his own design agency. He achieved international renown in 1960 when Kennedy chose the Round Chair for his presidential debate with Nixon. He has received a number of prestigious awards, including the Eckersberg Medal, the Grand Prix of the Milan Triennale and the Lunning Prize. Hans Wegner is one of the undisputed masters of Danish Modernism and one of the great Scandinavian designers of the 20th century. 26 September 1960 - Nixon versus Kennedy debate.
