The Iconic Wassily chair was first designed in 1925 by Marcel Breuer, He was a master carpenter at the Bauhaus in the 1920's where he was inspired by a newly purchased bicycle to design this lightweight iconic chair, which was later named Wassily as he promoted the chair. The Italian firm Gavina acquired the patent in 1962 from Thonet. Gavina was taken over by Knoll in1968 and only made in Italy for this short period. This chair, found in Perugia Italy and has all the authenticity of a chair from the Gavina period. The strong leather straps and waxed thread stitching, the continuous thick chromed metal with continuous tubing. The rusting, mainly under the leather and the underside of the chair, is also an indication of its age. There is also some pitting in the chrome, which is to be expected from a chair from the mid-century. The leather is still in a good strong condition with a small amount of wear. A robust and sturdy chair that will last for many more years and still looks very modern today.
