Vintage Sosaku Kokeshi. Unlike traditional kokeshi, which are more abstract, this doll depicts a specific scene or character. A traditional Japanese landscape or street scene is painted in detail on the broad, cylindrical body, including a figure in a kimono and Japanese architecture (such as a bridge or small gate). The head features a painted hairstyle with a traditional bun or mane, finished with refined patterns on the top. The doll has a distinctive construction in which the head and the red collar/kimono rest as a separate unit on a broad wooden base. This type of doll (sosaku = creative) is often made by artisans seeking more freedom than the strict rules of traditional Tōhoku styles allow, making them unique works of art and collector's items.
