More about Limoges Porcelain… The history of the most famous French porcelain factory begins in 1768, when important deposits of kaolin were discovered in Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche, very close to Limôges. This delicate white clay will be decisive in the creation of porcelain of such high quality that it will be compared to Chinese porcelain, then considered the finest in the world. In this way the development of a new ceramic industry in Europe began. King Louis XVI issued an edict granting the city of Limôges exclusive permission to produce porcelain for the kingdom of France. After the French Revolution, several private porcelain factories were established in the city, and each one will be identified with a different name or symbol. Today, each of their designs is unique and designed by true artists. Limôges porcelain is manufactured in around twenty factories, all located in the Haute-Vienne department. Recognizing authentic Limôges porcelain is very simple: All objects from the French house bear the seal of their manufacturer. Normally stamped in black or blue, this mark can give us very precise clues to date the piece. A large amount of Limôges porcelain was made in white, and was decorated later. For this reason, on many occasions this seal was accompanied by the decorator's seal.
