This coffee table, designed by Marie-Claude de Fouquières in the 1970s, is a remarkable piece. Its top is made from amber-orange fractal resin with golden reflections, evoking the cosmos. Fractal resin is the product of a complex chemical process, resulting from a high-temperature firing followed by multiple polishing phases. Its appearance is often described as quasi-magical, with its shimmering, fragmented patterns and unique features, such as bubbles or crystals. Each piece of fractal resin is unique, making this coffee table a one-off. It is supported by a brushed steel structure and base, adding to its characteristic 1970s charm. This emblematic work of its time is a true centerpiece that will captivate the eye.
Marie-Claude de Fouquières (1937) is a French furniture designer who created almost 1,800 pieces in fractal resin between 1969 and 1977. Her "exploded" style, the result of a chemical reaction in the resin, won her worldwide recognition, attracting such high-profile clients as David de Rothschild and the Emir of Qatar, as well as famous decorators such as David Hicks and Henri Samuel. Like Maria Pergay with stainless steel, de Fouquières was a forerunner of her time, working with a material that was emblematic of the 70s.
