Vintage Kokeshi by Hosaka Tomegoro. Hosaka Tomegoro was a prominent Japanese craftsman who lived from 1906 to 2005. He is known as an important maker of sosaku (creative) kokeshi dolls. He was born in 1906 in the city of Maebashi, located in Gunma Prefecture. This region (Gunma) grew into the absolute center of modern and creative kokeshi art in the twentieth century. Hosaka began his career as a kokeshi maker around 1935 and remained active in his field until a very old age.
Artistic style and characteristics. One of his most distinctive and acclaimed contributions to the kokeshi world was his series of dolls depicting Saitō Okichi (better known as Tojin Okichi, 1841–1893). She was a famous 19th-century geisha whose life story symbolizes Japan's early opening to the West. His work often balances on the border between traditional woodturning and abstract modernism. He used subtle refinements in the wood and, in line with a specific tradition within the sosaku movement, left many of his thematic dolls unsigned.
His talent was nationally recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Writer's Association Prize (during the 4th National Kokeshi Contest) and the JETRO Prize (during the 7th edition). Hosaka was an active member of the Japan Rural Craftsmen Association. In 1945, he also helped organize and coordinate the 4th National Kokeshi Doll Contest in his hometown of Maebashi.
