Vintage Kansubaki Kokeshi by Sato Kouson. This is a beautiful and authentic vintage Sosaku (creative) Kokeshi doll, titled "Kantsubaki" (Winter Camellia). This refined work of art is handcrafted and painted by the respected female master craftswoman Sato Kouson (also known by her artistic name Komura).
Sato Kouson is known in the collector world for her extremely serene, dreamy facial expressions and graceful designs, with which she left a unique mark on the post-war Kokeshi movement.
Her work is an important part of Japanese post-war folk art (Mingei). Because her active period was primarily in the 1960s and 70s, her authentic dolls are considered valuable, rare vintage collectibles today.
The slender wooden body is decorated with a beautifully stylized winter camellia. In Japanese culture, the camellia (tsubaki) symbolizes inner strength, pride, and steadfastness, as the flower blooms during the cold winter months.
The doll is in authentic vintage condition. There are natural signs of use and a beautiful patina present that are consistent with the age of the object. Please see the photos for an accurate impression of the condition.
The height is 24 cm.
