About this seller
Private sellerProduct description
This is a vintage vase from the Finnish manufacturer Iittala, designed by the renowned architect and designer Alvar Aalto. The object is an iconic example of Finnish design, known for its organic, undulating shape inspired by the Finnish lakes.
The vase is made of mouth-blown opal white glass, a technique that results in a deep, milky color with a clear glass outer layer. This specific model, often called the 'Savoy' vase, was originally designed in 1936 for a design competition for the Savoy restaurant in Helsinki. It has since become one of the most recognizable glass objects in the world, with examples in the permanent collection of MoMA in New York.
The piece is in excellent condition, emphasizing the timeless quality of both the material and the design. The clarity of the opal glass is completely intact and the surface is free of visible signs of use, thus preserving the character of the original design.
This Aalto vase is a sculptural object in itself and functions both as a vase for flowers and as an autonomous work of art. It fits seamlessly into a Scandinavian, modern or minimalist interior and adds an element of natural elegance to a sideboard, side table or windowsill.
