Product description
Fascinating table designed by Piet Hein and Bruno Mathsson for Frits Hansen, made in the 1960s in Denmark. The tabletop is made of black lacquered wood and chrome-plated steel legs. Enormous in simplicity and purity, this table is one of the most emblematic of Danish design, thanks precisely to its legs composed of triple beams of chrome-plated steel that join together in a circular base. Lightness, versatility, and originality are also achieved through the voluptuous shape of the tabletop, with rounded corners and a narrower center. About Piet Hein (1905–1996) Piet Hein was a Renaissance man, as he not only cultivated art but also other scientific and philosophical disciplines. He was also a mathematician, writer, and poet. This versatility probably arose from a childhood surrounded by politicians, artists, and writers. In 1944, Hein shared his work methodology, defending the idea that art is the solution to problems that cannot be clearly formulated before they are solved. He studied for a time at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts (Stockholm). Upon returning to Denmark, he switched to Philosophy and Theoretical Physics at the University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Denmark. This broad and varied education led him to believe that there was no insurmountable gap between the objective world of science and the subjective field of Fine Arts. In 1972, Yale University awarded him an honorary doctorate. Hein was the creator of the superellipse, which he developed in parallel with his poetic work. Using mathematics, he managed to discover a geometric form (a variation of an oval) that solved an urban planning problem in a 200-meter-long rectangular square in Stockholm, which connected two highways in a huge roundabout. This solution was later applied in other cities in France, Canada, Mexico, the USA, and Japan in buildings as diverse as an Olympic stadium, residential areas, and sports centers. He also applied this solution to designs such as tabletops. As a designer, he created vases, flower vases, lamps, candlesticks, tables, stools, kitchen utensils, coolers, bottle openers, and textiles, among many other designs. Piet Hein is one of the Danes with the most awards, including the Industrial Design Award in 1971 and the Design Council of Denmark's annual award in 1989. About Fritz Hansen: Fritz Hansen is a renowned modern furniture design company that works with the world's most prestigious designers.
