A boat glides slowly on the water while a fisherman watches from the stern and an immense net unfurls above the boat. On the horizon, a palm-lined shore and a second boat silhouette are enough to evoke the entire atmosphere of Vietnam's riverine landscapes. This scene is remarkable for its execution, as the entire composition is created through embroidery. The water, sky, vegetation, boats, figures, and even the reflections are constructed by an extremely tight succession of threads in shades of cream, aqua green, pale yellow, brown, and black. The large net is certainly the most spectacular detail of the work. Its mesh is truly formed by the thread, with a fineness that gives it almost the transparency of a real net. The dark silhouettes of the fishermen and their boat then stand out against this landscape with deliberately soft tones. This type of artwork belongs to the tradition of Vietnamese embroidery, a craft in which thread truly becomes pictorial material. More than a simple motif applied to fabric, this is a landscape entirely composed of textile, even down to the movements of the water and the distant vegetation. Preserved in its antique gilded and cream frame, the embroidery is in good condition. The mount surrounding the work shows some signs of age, including an old discoloration mark in the lower left corner, without altering the embroidered scene itself.
