Product description
Stunning Autumn Kokeshi by Masae Fujikawa. This is a modern, handmade sōsaku (creative) kokeshi doll with a warm autumn theme. Hair and face: The doll has a dark, glossy head with a refined updo (a hair bun on top) and sleek locks of hair framing the calm, minimalist face with delicate, closed eyes. Clothing and motifs: The wooden base serves as a kimono and is beautifully decorated with striking, bright red maple leaves (momiji). Geometric patterns and burnt-in details are also incorporated. On the bottom is a black signature sticker (hanko) belonging to the maker, Masae Fujikawa. Masae Fujikawa (1942–2015) was a prominent Japanese kokeshi-shi (kokeshi artist) from Gunma Prefecture. He is widely recognized as one of the early masters of the Sōsaku (creative) Kokeshi movement. Fujikawa was born in Gunma Prefecture and began making kokeshi dolls at the age of 17 (in 1959). He apprenticed with the renowned master Ishida Kanji. In 1991, he founded the Fujikawa Craft Corporation, a family business that his brothers Kazumi and Eiichi later joined. Recognition: During his lifetime, he won numerous prestigious awards. His greatest achievement was winning the Prime Minister’s Award twice (in 1996 and 2002), the highest artistic distinction in the kokeshi world. The height is 16 cm; please view the photos for the condition. Please note: The kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or small cracks/dents present to a greater or lesser extent.
