Tough Shimizu no Jirochō Kokeshi. This Sōsaku Kokeshi depicts Shimizu no Jirochō (1820–1893), a legendary Japanese yakuza boss and folk hero from the late Edo to early Meiji period. Jirochō, often referred to as a "chivalrous gangster," is known for his role in organizing and maintaining order within criminal gangs while simultaneously supporting local communities. His story has been romanticized in kabuki, films, and literature as a samurai-like figure of honor and justice. The face is painted with sharp, intense eyebrows and a powerful gaze, reflecting Jirochō's imposing presence and fearless leadership. The distinctive traveler's hat (kasa). The wide hat symbolizes the nomadic life of an outlaw, as Jirochō was known for his travels throughout Japan. This kokeshi honors a legendary historical figure known for his dual identity as a feared gangster and benevolent leader. This Shimizu no Jirochō kokeshi is perfect for display and captures the spirit of a bygone era where justice and loyalty were upheld by men who lived outside the law but adhered to their own moral codes.
