What happens when you make an everyday object softer?
And I mean *really* soft. With a thick layer of plant-based foam and a skin of tiny kiwi hairs.
The Soft Cabinet is part of an ongoing investigation into a new material and form language for our interiors. A quest for objects that feel friendlier. Less industrial, perhaps. Less austere, in any case!
Within our built environment, most furniture is still designed based on hardness: straight lines, sharp transitions, and materials that must primarily be functional or efficient. With this project, Zachte Zaken investigates what happens when that logic shifts towards softness, tactility, and approachability.
Not as a gimmick, but as a serious design approach.
By fully upholstering recognizable objects — such as a cabinet — and rounding off their shapes, a different relationship emerges between people and the interior. Functional furniture acquires a softer presence in the space and appears less distant or imposing.
There are no real answers yet.
The research question is still very much in flux. But there is an almost untamable urge to make more and more things soft.
Out of curiosity.
Out of kindness.
From an acoustic desire.
But also from the pleasure of alienating everyday furniture just enough so that it suddenly feels very logical again.
