This set of two Josef Hofmann chairs, produced in Austria between approximately 1890 and 1920, represents an important piece of early twentieth-century design history. The chairs display the characteristic bentwood construction typical of Viennese furniture making from that period. Hofmann was the counterpart to Thonet.
Crafted from bentwood with a warm brown finish, the chairs feature a classic rattan seat. The backrest is constructed from slender, turned spindles that give an elegant and airy appearance. The original paper labels from Josef Hofmann, Vienna, Austria, are still partially present on the underside, confirming the provenance and authenticity of this set.
The chairs are in a condition commensurate with their age and use; however, one chair has a small hole in the rattan (see detail photo) and an authentic patina that emphasizes the character of the wood. The rattan seats and wooden frames show the ravages of time, which contributes to the historical value of the objects. This set fits perfectly into a classic or eclectic interior, where they can serve as characterful occasional chairs or as part of an intimate seating area. They combine effortlessly with both antique and more contemporary pieces of furniture.
