Lovely set of two antique Digoin Sarreguemines fine earthenware serving dishes, comprising a round plate and a deep round dish, both approximately 27 cm in diameter. Produced in the 1930s, these two pieces bear the Digoin Sarreguemines France crest mark on their reverse. They belong to that particularly appealing period of the factory when the decorative vocabulary of French table settings was transforming under the influence of Art Deco. The Digoin factory, established in the late 19th century in Saône-et-Loire as an extension of the great Sarreguemines house, became one of the household names in French tableware during the 20th century. Its dinnerware accompanied both everyday life and more formal tables, and, over the decades, featured hundreds of shapes and designs. After the First World War, Digoin and Sarreguemines were united within a single company, giving rise to these pieces, now recognizable by their famous shared stamp. Here, the composition is particularly representative of the taste of the 1930s. The slightly faceted shape is accentuated by wide gradient blue bands arranged in rays, creating a very Art Deco geometric design. This deliberately graphic architecture contrasts with the delicacy of the small bouquets of pink and blue roses, accompanied by a few green leaves and lightly scattered across the well of the dish. A fine gilded line finally emphasizes the rim and the separation between the rim and the well, adding a more precious touch to the set. This interplay between geometry, color, and traditional floral decor is precisely what constitutes the charm of French interwar tableware: the rose bouquet remains familiar, but it is integrated into a much more modern composition. A comparable set featuring this type of decor from Digoin-Sarreguemines is also documented as 1930s Art Deco. Both dishes are in good overall condition for their age. The earthenware retains a beautiful sheen, and the decorations are fresh and well-preserved. The gilding shows, in places, the slight natural patina of antique tableware, visible in the photographs.
