Product description
Iconic 40/4 chairs, designed by American designer David Rowland. He conceived and began designing the 40/4 chair in 1956, but its definitive development required eight years of refinement and prototyping. The chair was officially introduced to the market and launched globally in 1964. It is called "40/4" because Rowland designed it so that 40 could be stacked, making it the first high-density stackable chair in history. Historical production was initially entrusted to General Fireproofing Co. (GF) in the United States. Subsequently, from the late 1960s, through an initial sub-licensing agreement for production and sales for the European market, it was entrusted to Howe (Denmark), which still produces them today. The model in the image is the classic version with a bent beech wood seat and backrest and a chromed steel sled base. Immediately after its presentation, it won the prestigious Grand Prix at the Triennale di Milano in 1964. It is considered one of the most important designs of the 20th century and is exhibited in museums such as MoMA in New York. These chairs have been used in prestigious settings worldwide, from St. Paul's Cathedral in London to the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
