Product description
Secretary Bookcase With Built-In Desk, Johannes Sorth, Denmark, 1966. Designed by Johannes Sorth and produced by Nexø Møbelfabrik on the Danish island of Bornholm, this rosewood secretary bookcase dates from 1 June 1966, as confirmed by the original production stamp on the reverse. The design combines generous open shelving with a practical writing surface and integrated storage, reflecting the thoughtful multifunctionality that characterises much of Danish furniture from the period. The architectural silhouette is softened by elegantly curved side panels that flow into the writing surface, creating a continuous profile from the upper shelving to the cabinet below. Richly figured rosewood veneer has been carefully selected throughout, displaying dramatic grain patterns across the shelves, writing surface and drawer fronts. Three wide drawers feature sculpted recessed pulls, while the cabinet above is fitted with finely fluted tambour doors that conceal a well-organised interior. Inside are three small drawers, open shelving, vertical document dividers and additional storage, allowing the piece to function equally well as a home office, writing desk or display cabinet. The restrained detailing is complemented by slender tapered legs and refined proportions, giving the substantial cabinet a remarkably light appearance. Every element reflects the high standard of cabinetmaking associated with Bornholm furniture production during the 1960s. The bookcase has been carefully cleaned, fully inspected and treated with a high-quality furniture oil, allowing the rosewood to regain its depth and warmth while preserving its natural character. It remains in very good vintage condition with only minor signs of age and use, including a small professionally stabilised veneer repair to one side, consistent with its history.
