Manu De Mey was born in Antwerp in 1965, his mother a British artist and his father a Flemish accountant. He grew up as the oldest of four boys in Kalmthout, a beautiful moor in the north of Belgium.
With his art, Manu tries to create something visually striking to convey a strong emotion. His portraits are often ambiguous and this is usually intentional. The viewer is never sure if he is looking at a victim or a strong person, or is it both? Manu's world is populated by sad, melancholy people with repressed emotions, often beautiful but damaged women.
Manu is just beginning his work this year and has already had several exhibitions, including the prestigious Accessible Art Fair (ACAF) at the Bozar, Brussels.
